The Battle of Ideas: Combating Misinformation in the Digital Age
Dr Santosh Kumar Mohapatra, Cuttack
Today’s political struggle is increasingly driven by ideas and narratives rather than mere physical mobilization. Misinformation, disinformation, half-truths, and outright falsehoods are being widely circulated, often shaping public perception in misleading ways. In many instances, the ruling dispensation shifts blame onto the opposition, even in matters where accountability clearly rests with those in power. The issue of women’s reservation stands out as a striking example, where responsibility for delay or non-implementation is frequently deflected.
At the same time, it was claimed that over 20 crore people had participated in the last industrial strike. This represents a vast and powerful collective. However, its potential remains underutilized in the digital sphere.
If even 20 percent of these participants actively engaged on social media to disseminate accurate information and counter misleading narratives, it could significantly influence the political discourse and bring about meaningful change.
Yet, the reality is that only a small fraction appears seriously committed to this effort. In an era where information itself is a battleground, passive participation is no longer sufficient. A more conscious, organized, and sustained engagement in the realm of ideas and communication is essential to ensure that truth prevails over distortion.
The unpleasant thing is that people who had never tried to spread correct information and curb disinformation in their life occupies important places years together and enjoy prestige, honour more.
