Changing Public Consciousness: The Central Task of Today’s Movement

Dr Santosh Kumar Mohapatra

We may be right in what we say, and what we stand for may indeed be true. Yet, the reality is that we are not receiving the broad support that our ideas and positions deserve.
Many intellectuals, politicians and administrators understand the reality and, in their own way, may even agree with us. However, they often hesitate to openly support our views. This reflects a deeper reality of our society: people tend to gravitate towards power.
They may criticise political leaders behind their backs, but when they are in front of them, they often praise and flatter them. Such behaviour is not necessarily a reflection of conviction; it is frequently driven by self-interest, fear, or the desire to remain close to power and influence.
Therefore, merely speaking the truth is not enough. The greater challenge before any progressive movement is to change people’s consciousness, strengthen their independent thinking and create the courage to speak truth to power.
An effective movement must go beyond occasional protests or criticism. It must educate people, challenge unquestioned beliefs, expose contradictions and encourage citizens to think independently rather than simply follow those who hold power.
Ultimately, lasting social and political change cannot come only from changing governments or leaders. It requires a transformation in people’s minds, values and consciousness.
Therefore, bringing about such a transformation in public consciousness should be one of the principal responsibilities of today’s movement.
