Silence of the Privileged: A Crisis of Academic Responsibility
A growing number of academicians today appear to align themselves with flawed government policies, tailoring their writings and positions to suit prevailing power structures. The motivation is often clear—career advancement, promotions, and access to influential positions.
What is more concerning is that, unlike journalists whose professional lives are marked by uncertainty and risk, these academicians enjoy substantial financial security—drawing high salaries, often exceeding ₹3 lakh per month, along with assured pensions and social prestige. Yet, despite this stability and privilege, many choose silence at a time when critical engagement is most needed.
They continue to command respect and recognition in society, but increasingly without the corresponding contribution of intellectual courage or public accountability.
