The Value of Original Thought in Writing and Speech
A speech or a piece of writing becomes meaningful only when the speaker or writer brings in original ideas and a distinct perspective. Often, such thoughts are either unknown to others or, even if known, have never been consciously articulated by them. Repeating old and familiar ideas does little to enrich discourse. The length of a speech—whether an hour or just ten minutes—is not what matters. What truly counts is the freshness of thought and how effectively it connects with real life. Developing such originality is not instantaneous; it emerges over time through continuous reading, writing, and meaningful engagement with others. Even a five-minute speech can be powerful if it carries genuine insight. For instance, the title of my recent article, “Workers over Billionaires,” has not appeared in any regional or national newspapers so far. It came to me after going through several international websites, research papers, reports of the International Labour Organization (ILO), statements of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), along with various national reports and surveys.
