Women’s Issues and the Need for a Humane Society
Dr. Santosh Kumar Mohapatra
Women’s problems are essentially social problems. Neither men nor women alone can be held entirely responsible for them, nor can either be completely absolved. Social realities are shaped by a complex interaction of attitudes, institutions, and systems that influence the behaviour and opportunities of individuals.
Often, when a woman rises to the highest positions of authority—even as the head of a state or government—she does not necessarily represent or prioritise the collective interests of women. Like any other leader, she functions within a system shaped by institutions, political forces, and power structures that have enabled her rise to that position. Therefore, merely placing individuals in positions of authority does not automatically resolve deeper social challenges.
What is truly necessary is the improvement of society and the systems that govern it. A system becomes better only when the people who constitute it strive to become good human beings in every aspect of life—not merely in words, but in conduct and values.
Undoubtedly, women have made significant progress in many spheres. Greater opportunities in education, employment, and public life have helped them achieve a measure of equality that was once denied. However, at the same time, there are worrying signs that social values have weakened in many respects. Increasing insensitivity, arrogance, and regressive behaviour can be observed in everyday life.
The unchecked influence of pornography, the disintegration of family structures, and the rising incidence of divorce and extramarital relationships are often cited as indicators of deeper social changes. These trends, sometimes associated with the uncritical imitation of certain aspects of Western lifestyles, have contributed to growing social tensions and moral dilemmas.
Therefore, the real challenge before us is not merely about gender debates but about the moral and social character of our society. Building a just and harmonious society requires cultivating empathy, responsibility, and ethical conduct among all individuals. Only when people strive to become better human beings—in thought, word, and action—can society truly progress and create an environment where both women and men can live with dignity, respect, and mutual understanding.
