An FIR has been filed against the manager and several staff members of the State Bank of India (SBI), Sector 15 branch in Faridabad, following allegations of the theft of approximately one kilogram of gold and three kilograms of silver from a customer’s locker. The value of the missing items is estimated to be in crores of rupees.
Details of the Incident
Complainant: A local Chartered Accountant (CA) named D.C. Garg and his wife, residents of Sector 15A, Faridabad.
Discovery: In January 2026, the complainant’s wife visited the bank to operate their joint locker, held since 2014, but found that her key did not work and the locker was no longer registered in their name.
Allegation: The Gargs allege that the bank management broke open their locker, installed a new lock, and re-allotted it to another customer without their knowledge or consent, leading to the misappropriation of their valuables.
Missing Items: The complaint lists about 1 kg of gold ornaments and 3 kg of silver jewellery and coins as missing.
Bank’s Response: The bank management reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation or documentation (such as videography or an inventory list) regarding the procedure used to break open and reassign the locker. A regional manager stated it is an internal matter under investigation.
Current Status
Police Action: The Central Police Station has registered a criminal case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to criminal breach of trust.
Investigation: The Faridabad Police are scrutinizing bank records, locker registers, and surveillance footage. A formal notice has been issued to the bank, demanding the surrender documentation they claimed to have.
Concerns: The incident has raised significant public concern regarding the security protocols and integrity of banking institutions’ locker services.
Note on Locker Safety: According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, if a loss is due to the bank’s negligence (theft or fire), the bank’s liability is capped at 100 times the annual locker rent, highlighting the importance of personal insurance for high-value items.
