Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other Congress leaders were detained by police on Tuesday after they staged an over two-hour protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. Stepping up the attack on the Centre over Delhi Police’s crackdown on the Parliament march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Gandhi held a sit-in protest at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. The Congress said the party leaders were taken to Model Town police station.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, whom the government sent to tackle the situation, said Gandhi first demanded a discussion on the NEET paper leak and protests against it in Parliament. The government, Singh said, agreed to this, but then Gandhi added a demand: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. Singh eventually left the protest site, and police detained Congress leaders, including the Gandhis, to end the demonstration that stretched for over two hours.
Accompanied by Wayanad MP and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders, Gandhi reached the Prime Minister’s address at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg on Monday afternoon. The Congress leaders then sat on the ground and started raising slogans, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The government deputed Union Minister Singh to manage the situation. He reached the protest site, spoke to Gandhi and left. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule joined the demonstration too.
