A Disturbing Reflection on the State of Our Society
The tragic death of the Inspector-in-Charge of Chauliaganj Police Station, Ms. Beauty Mohanty, who was found hanging in her official quarters on Saturday morning in Cuttack, is deeply shocking and disturbing.
If a police officer is not safe even within her official residence, it raises a profound question: who, then, can truly guarantee the safety and security of ordinary citizens?
While the circumstances of this unfortunate incident are yet to be fully established, it compels us to reflect on the state of our society. We appear to be witnessing a gradual erosion of moral values, empathy, justice, and mutual respect. Increasingly, people seem to be driven by intolerance, vindictiveness, and hostility towards even constructive criticism. Such tendencies weaken the social fabric and create an atmosphere of fear, distrust, and alienation.
In my view, our society today is not the same as it was a decade ago. When moral and social standards deteriorate, no section of society remains immune—not even those entrusted with maintaining law and order. This is a dangerous trend that deserves serious introspection by all of us.
