The Forgotten Power of Detachment
Swami Vivekananda once observed that a person should possess the power of detachment as much as the power of attachment. Attachment gives meaning to relationships, ideals, and aspirations. But detachment gives us the strength to face life’s disappointments with dignity and resilience.
Today, many young people have immense capacity to love, dream, and commit, but often lack the emotional strength to detach gracefully when circumstances do not unfold as they had hoped. This is not an argument in favour of betrayal, irresponsibility, or abandoning relationships. Rather, it is about developing the maturity to accept reality, adapt to changing situations, and move forward when events are beyond our control.
The inability to cope with setbacks, broken expectations, or changing realities often leads to prolonged conflict, emotional distress, and strained relationships. While every divorce or family breakdown has its own complex causes, emotional resilience and the ability to adapt can help many people navigate difficulties more constructively.
The real strength lies not only in holding on, but also in knowing when and how to let go with wisdom, self-respect, and compassion.
