୧୯୭୬ ମସିହାରେ ମାଓ ଜେଦୋଙ୍ଗଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପରେ ଚୀନର ସବୁଠୁ ପ୍ରଭାବଶାଳୀ ନେତା ଭାବେ ଉଦ୍ଭାସିତ ହୋଇଥିବା ଚୀନୀ ରାଜନେତା ଓ ବିପ୍ଳବୀ ଦେଙ୍ଗ୍ ସିଆଓପିଙ୍ଗ (୧୯୦୪–୧୯୯୭) ଏକଥା କହିଥିଲେ—“ବିଲେଇ କଳା ହେଉ କି ଧଳା, ଯେପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ସେ ମୂଷା ଧରେ, ସେଥିରେ କିଛି ମାନେ ନାହିଁ।”ଚୀନର ଆର୍ଥିକ ସୁଧାର ପୂର୍ବରୁ କହାଯାଇଥିବା ଏହି କଥା ତାଙ୍କର ବ୍ୟବହାରିକ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିଭଙ୍ଗୀର ପ୍ରତୀକ ଭାବେ ପରିଚିତ ହୋଇଯାଇଛି—ଅର୍ଥନୈତିକ ପ୍ରଣାଳୀର ଆଦର୍ଶଗତ ରଙ୍ଗ ନୁହେଁ, ବରଂ ସେ ପ୍ରଣାଳୀ ଫଳାଫଳ ଦେଉଛି କି ନାହିଁ, ସେଇଟି ମୁଖ୍ୟ।

Emerging as China’s most influential figure after Mao Zedong’s death in 1976, Chinese statesman and revolutionary Deng Xiaoping(1904- 1997) once remarked:”It doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice.” This phrase, uttered well before China’s economic reforms, has come to symbolise his pragmatic approach: what matters is whether an economic system delivers results, not its ideological colour.
