ଇଂଲିଶ ଲୋକେ ଏକ ଅସଭ୍ୟ ରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରରେ ରହୁଥିବାବେଳେ ଭାରତରେ ଅସନ୍ତୁଷ୍ଟ ଲୋକେ ହରତାଳ କରୁଥିଲେ- ମହାତ୍ମା ଗାନ୍ଧୀ (୧୯୦୬)
ମହାତ୍ମା ଗାନ୍ଧୀ ୧୯୦୬ ମସିହାରେ (ଦକ୍ଷିଣ ଆଫ୍ରିକାରେ ଥିବା ସମୟରେ) Indian Opinion ପତ୍ରିକାରେ (୬ ଅକ୍ଟୋବର ୧୯୦୬) ଏହି ଭାବରେ ଲେଖିଥିଲେ:
“When we are dissatisfied with anything, we often resort to hartal. In India we often consider it our duty to do so, in order to obtain redress of our grievances, particularly in the Native States. The hartal only means that we do not approve of a certain measure taken by the ruler. This tradition of resisting a law has been in vogue among us from very early days, when the English people were in a barbarous state.”
ସରଳ ଭାବେ ଅର୍ଥ:
ଗାନ୍ଧୀ କହିଥିଲେ ଯେ ଭାରତରେ ହରତାଳ (ଧର୍ମଘଟ/ବିରୋଧ) କରିବାର ପରମ୍ପରା ବହୁତ ପୁରୁଣା। ଏହି ପରମ୍ପରା ସେହି ସମୟରୁ ଚାଲିଆସୁଛି ଯେତେବେଳେ ଇଂରେଜମାନେ ନିଜେ ଏକ “ବାର୍ବରସ୍” (ଅସଭ୍ୟ/ଅସଭ୍ୟତାର) ଅବସ୍ଥାରେ ଥିଲେ।
