  2. Light and darkness: Exposure to light and darkness helps regulate our circadian rhythm. During the day, sunlight triggers the SCN to release alertness hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. At night, the absence of light triggers the release of sleep hormones like melatonin.
  3. Body temperature: Our body temperature naturally drops at night, which helps induce sleep. This temperature drop is regulated by the SCN and is influenced by the release of melatonin.
  4. Evolutionary advantages: Throughout history, humans have evolved to be diurnal, meaning we’re active during the day and rest at night. This pattern helped our ancestors conserve energy, avoid predators, and optimize their daily activities.
  5. Social and cultural influences: Our modern society and cultural norms also play a role in shaping our sleep patterns. We’ve established a standard 24-hour clock, with most people working and socializing during the day and sleeping at night.
