A case that has recently captured the nation’s attention is the suicide of AI software engineer Atul Subhash. Unable to bear the strained relationship and mental torture from his wife, Atul took his own life on December 9. Before his death, he wrote a 24-page suicide note and made a video that went viral on social media.
Meanwhile, anathor intriguing case of divorce involving an elderly couple from Karnal has surfaced. This case bears many similarities to Atul Subhash’s. Here too, the husband accused his wife of mental cruelty. After 18 years of legal battles, the elderly man settled with his wife for 3 crores and obtained a divorce.

This case comes from Karnal, Haryana, where an elderly couple in their 70s decided to divorce after 44 years of marriage. The 70-year-old husband paid 73-year-old wife 3 crores as a settlement.

The couple decided to part ways after an 18-year-long legal struggle. The husband stated that his wife subjected him to mental cruelty and that he had had enough of the relationship. To pay the settlement amount, the husband sold his agricultural land and paid the 3 crore sum. The Punjab and Haryana High Court granted their divorce. They married on August 27, 1980, and have two daughters and one son.

Relationship was good for 15 years

For nearly 25 years, their relationship was good, but things started to sour afterward. Since May 8, 2006, they lived separately. The husband filed for divorce in 2013, citing mental cruelty. After his petition was rejected, he went to the High Court. After an 11-year-long legal battle, he was granted the divorce, and after paying his wife 3 crores, the couple parted ways.

Conditions set by the elderly man

The settlement amount will be given in cash, demand drafts, and gold or silver jewelry. It’s clear that the husband is willing to give his lifetime earnings as a settlement. According to sources, the elderly man sold 2.16 crores worth of land and paid an additional 50 lakhs in cash, which he raised by selling his crops. He also gave 40 lakhs worth of jewelry. The settlement also stipulates that if the elderly man passes away, neither his wife nor children will have any claim to the property. This decision was made by Justices Sudhir Singh and Jasjit Singh Bedi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
