A recent study reveals that more than half of branded plastic waste worldwide can be linked to just 56 companies. Among these, four brands contribute over 20% of the pollution: The Coca-Cola Company (11%), PepsiCo (5%), Nestlé (3%), and Danone (2%). The research, published in Science Advances and conducted by scientists from Dalhousie University and other global universities, analyzed plastic pollution in 84 countries over five years.

According to co-author Tony Walker, a professor at Dalhousie’s school for resource and environmental studies, these companies are among the largest globally and have a presence in every country. The study underscores the urgent need for corporate responsibility in addressing plastic pollution, given the significant impact of these companies on the environment.

In response to the findings, The Coca-Cola Company emphasized its commitment to addressing plastic pollution through advocating for a comprehensive global policy framework. They urge other companies to join in this effort to combat plastic waste on a global scale.

Nestlé acknowledged the severity of plastic pollution and highlighted its ongoing efforts to tackle the issue. The company supports the implementation of global legally binding regulations and is actively involved in waste collection, sorting, and recycling initiatives across various continents. However, Danone has not yet commented on the study’s findings.
