The Powerful Protectors of Charlatans: Victims Denied Justice
Dr Santosh Kumar Mohapatra
On numerous occasions, allegations of sexual exploitation, murder, financial fraud and other serious crimes have surfaced against self-styled godmen, religious charlatans and so-called spiritual leaders. Yet,
many of them continue to evade the law and escape punishment, raising serious questions about the effectiveness and impartiality of our criminal justice system.
The problem is not merely the influence these individuals wield over their followers, but also the powerful networks of beneficiaries who protect them.
Politicians, wealthy individuals, corporate interests and influential people often cultivate relationships with such self-styled spiritual leaders for political mileage, financial advantages, social influence or personal interests. In return, these godmen enjoy political patronage, administrative protection and social legitimacy.
Consequently, the law often appears powerless against those who enjoy the protection of the powerful. Investigations may be delayed, evidence may be compromised and victims may be intimidated into silence.
The worst sufferers are the victims. Instead of receiving justice, they frequently face threats to their lives, social ostracism, humiliation and character assassination. Their families may also face intimidation and pressure. In a deeply unequal society, the powerful are often protected while the vulnerable are forced to fight lonely battles for justice.
This exposes the dangerous nexus between religion, money, politics and power. Faith should never become a shield for criminality, and spiritual influence should not place anyone above the law.
A society governed by the rule of law cannot allow influential individuals to enjoy immunity merely because they command followers or maintain connections with the political and economic establishment. Those who exploit public faith must be held accountable, and those who protect them must also face scrutiny.
Justice loses its meaning when the powerful enjoy protection while victims are punished for speaking the truth.
