Researchers at the University of Córdoba have discovered the world’s oldest wine, a 2000-year-old white wine containing a man’s ashes, in a Roman tomb in Carmona, Spain.

Published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, the find reveals that the wine was likely part of burial rituals. The tomb, found in 2019, contained various artifacts including jewels and silk fabric.

The urn with the man’s ashes and wine illustrates the gender-specific practices of ancient Roman funerary customs, as women were prohibited from tasting wine.
