The Pandavas’ last journey,
known as Mahaprasthanika Parva, is a story of their renunciation of worldly life after the Kurukshetra war and their subsequent ascent towards heaven. Led by Yudhishthira, they embarked on a pilgrimage with Draupadi and were joined by a dog. One by one, they fell during the trek, until only Yudhishthira and the dog remained. Indra then appeared to take Yudhishthira to heaven in a chariot, but he refused to leave the dog behind, who was revealed to be Yama (Dharma).

Yudhishthira remained steadfast in his dharma and refused to abandon the dog even when offered a place in Indra’s chariot.
Revelation of Yama:
The dog, revealed to be Yama (Dharma), tested Yudhishthira’s commitment to dharma, which he passed.
Entry into Heaven:
Yudhishthira finally entered heaven and found his brothers and Draupadi there, cleansed of their sins.
The story highlights the themes of dharma, karma, and the importance of loyalty and devotion, even in the face of death and the afterlife.
