His father, Pandurang Rao Tope, was a noble in the court of the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II.
His mother was Rukhmabai.

He was a key figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the First War of Independence.
He was a close associate of Nana Saheb, the adopted son of the Peshwa.
Revolt in Gwalior during the 1857 uprising was primarily led by Tantia Tope and Rani Lakshmibai, though they were not the sole leaders. While they were successful in seizing Gwalior, the Scindia, the ruler of Gwalior at the time, remained loyal to the British.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
Tantia Tope:
He was a prominent leader of the 1857 revolt, known for his military skills and strategic thinking. He played a key role in the revolt in Kanpur and later joined Rani Lakshmibai in Jhansi and Gwalior.
Rani Lakshmibai:
She was the Rani of Jhansi and a fierce fighter who led the defense of Jhansi against the British. She also joined forces with Tantia Tope in Gwalior.
The Scindia of Gwalior:
He was the ruler of the state of Gwalior, a minor child during the revolt, and he sided with the East India Company. This meant that while Tantia Tope and Rani Lakshmibai seized Gwalior, they were ultimately unable to hold it against the British forces.
Other Leaders:
While Tantia Tope and Rani Lakshmibai were key figures in the Gwalior revolt, other leaders were also involved, including Azimullah Khan, Nana Sahib, and Rao Sahib.
