Following days of relentless rain, a major landslide disrupted traffic along Chakhabama-Zunheboto, a vital route connecting Kohima, Pfutsero, and Zunheboto. The landslide occurred around 11 km from the state capital, just before Dzüü bridge, on Sunday afternoon.

The landslide, which brought down a large volume of rocks and loose soil, completely blocked the highway, isolating a crucial passage for travelers. By Monday, a limited portion of the debris had been cleared, allowing for the resumption of traffic. However, only a narrow one-way lane was accessible, forcing vehicles to cautiously navigate a bottleneck between the remaining soil debris and the safety railings.

Though the 2-lane road is reportedly under the maintenance guarantee for five years, despite this contractual obligation, a visit to the site on Monday revealed a troubling lack of action. No machinery or personnel from the firm were present, raising concerns among commuters and local authorities alike.
Residents and travelers voiced their frustration, noting the absence of proper maintenance and prompt response to the crisis.

The highway serves as a crucial lifeline for many communities in the region, and further deterioration could severely impact connectivity and daily life. The ongoing monsoon season heightens these concerns, with the potential for additional landslides posing a significant threat.

Local officials have urged the parties responsible to expedite the clearing and stabilisation of the road to prevent further disruption. In the meantime, travelers have been advised to proceed with caution and be prepared for delays.

The situation underscores the need for better infrastructure management and preparedness, especially in regions prone to natural calamities. As the affected area remains precarious, the authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the public.
