Difference In Time ?
The Earth’s Inner Core Has Been Spinning Slower Since 2010
Recent research shows that Earth’s inner core has been slowing down compared to its surface since around 2010. This is the first time scientists have observed such a slowdown since they developed the tools to measure it.
Researchers discovered this by analyzing seismic waves from earthquakes. They published their findings in a study called “Inner core backtracking by seismic waveform change reversals” in the journal Nature.
This slowdown might eventually make days slightly longer and could also have minor effects on Earth’s magnetic field. John Vidale, a professor at USC Dornsife College, mentioned that this change could lengthen the day by a tiny fraction of a second. He explained, “It’s very hard to notice, on the order of a thousandth of a second, almost lost in the noise of the churning oceans and atmosphere.”
