Jammu & Kashmir: This year, Pitru Paksha Shraddha will begin on Tuesday, 17th September and will end on Wednesday, 2nd October. Shraddha is the act of offering with devotion for the peace and satisfaction of the souls of ancestors. During Pitru Paksha, one should perform Shraddha, Tarpan, and charity according to their capability in honor of their ancestors.Pitru Paksha begins from the full moon of the Bhadrapada month and lasts until the new moon of the Ashwin month. On the date of the ancestor’s death, Pind Daan, Tarpan, and offerings like food, clothes, fruits, and sweets along with monetary donations should be made to Brahmins. Afterward, food should also be given to the poor. The more one donates, the more it reaches the ancestors. By performing Shraddha, a person gets free from ancestral debts and progresses on the path of liberation by satisfying the ancestors. The pleased ancestors bless the person with health, wealth, prosperity, and liberation.Regarding Pitru Paksha Shraddha, Mahant Rohit Shastri (Jyotishacharya), President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish avim Vedic sansthan Trust, explained that Shraddha is performed on the exact date of death. For example, if the death occurred on Pratipada, Shraddha will be performed on Pratipada. Similarly, Shraddha for those who died unnatural deaths (such as accidents or suicides) is done on Chaturdashi. The Shraddha for saints and monks is performed on Dwadashi. For those who do not know the death date of their ancestors, Shraddha is done on Amavasya, which is called Sarva Pitru Shraddha.
