Jammu & Kashmir : Ashwin Purnima is also known as Sharad Purnima. According to Mahant Rohit Shastri (Jyotishacharya), President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish avim Vedic Sansthan Trust, Ashwin month’s full moon is considered the most auspicious among all full moons of the year. It is also known by other names like Sharad Utsav, Raas Purnima, Kojagari Purnima, and Kamala Purnima.

To attain happiness, fortune, longevity, good health, and wealth, one should bathe early in the morning on this day, perform self-worship, and offer special prayers to Lord Ganesha, Lakshmi-Narayan, and one’s personal deity. At night, one should offer Arghya (water oblation) to the Moon before consuming food.

Begins: Monday, October 6 at 12:24 PM

Ends: Tuesday, October 7 at 9:18 AM

Hence, Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on Monday, October 6.

According to mythological belief, Lord Krishna performed the Maha Raas with the Gopis on this night, which is why it is also known as Raas Purnima. On this night, Moon God, adorned with all 16 Kalas (phases), showers coolness and nectar upon all beings.

The Moon is closest to Earth on Sharad Purnima night. It is believed that the Moon showers Amrit (divine nectar), which is beneficial for health. As per tradition, people prepare kheer (rice pudding) with dry fruits and place it under the open sky in moonlight overnight. The next morning, after bathing and offering it to God, the kheer is distributed to Brahmins, young girls, and family. Consuming this is believed to cure various ailments. Placing the kheer in a silver vessel is considered especially auspicious.

Significance of Night Vigil on Sharad Purnima:

It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi roams the Earth at night to see who is awake. Those who remain awake receive her special blessings.

Special Remedies to Attract Goddess Lakshmi:

Light 21 ghee lamps in the house.

Recite the Shri Suktam 21 times.

Chant “Om Somaya Namah” using a pearl or sphatik (crystal) mala.

Chant “Om Shreem” 21 rosaries using a kamalgatta mala (lotus seed rosary).

Recite Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, Kanakadhara Stotra, Vishnu Sahasranama, and Madhurashtakam.

To enhance vision, gaze at the moonlight for 25–30 minutes.

Engaging in lustful activities on Sharad Purnima night may result in physically disabled children or serious health issues, according to traditional beliefs.

It is said that Ravana, the King of Lanka, used to absorb moonlight through a mirror onto his navel on this night to regain youthful vitality.

Letting the moonlight fall on a pregnant woman’s navel is believed to strengthen the fetus. Sharad Purnima moonlight is thus considered extremely important.

Aries (Mesh): Feed kheer to young girls; flow rice washed in milk into a flowing stream.

Taurus (Vrishabha): Donate milk, curd, and cow ghee to a temple.

Gemini (Mithun): Donate silver, milk, and rice.

Cancer (Karka): Donate sweets made from cow’s milk to the poor.

Leo (Simha): Donate jaggery in a temple.

Virgo (Kanya): Feed kheer to young girls.

Libra (Tula): Donate milk, wheat flour, rice, and ghee at a temple.
