Fire at MMC Shopping Complex Mokokchung razes down 62 shops, and damages several others. Immediate relief extended to the victims.
Akashvani News Kohima 5th February, 2024: A total of 62 shops were completely razed while 73 shops severely damaged after a massive fire broke out at the MMC Shopping Complex in Mokokchung on Saturday evening. This was informed by Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung Thsuvisie Phoji during an emergency joint meeting with civil society organizations including Ao Senden, Watsu Mungdang, Ao Students’ Conference, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town, Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Fire & Emergency Services, SDRF, Police yesterday to take stock of the situation and provide immediate relief and assistance to the affected shop owners, besides rehabilitation. The meeting was also attended by Advisor Minority Affairs and Sericulture and Minority Affairs, by Imkongmar. The DC said, while, it is yet to carried out the complete assessment of the damages, the mishap is suspected to be caused by short circuit. he announced an immediate relief of 10,000 rupees each to the burnt down shops while an amount of 5,000 rupees each to the severely damaged shops. Phoji however noted that the immediate relief should not be misconstrued as compensation to the loss incurred in the fire. The DC expressed his gratitude to all personnel from various agencies involved besides the public in dousing the fire and bringing the situation under control after 4-5 hours since the fire broke out. SDPO Mokokchung Tizhi Pojar also informed that registration of a case is underway, and added that the complex has been sealed for security reasons and further deployed security personnel round the clock duty at the complex. Advisor Imkongmar also assured that the state government will definitely address into the matter and provide necessary assistance at the earliest. Later, the Advisor along with the administration and representatives of the civil societies visited the incident site and accessed the situation. Meanwhile, ADC & Administrator of Mokokchung Municipal Council Chumlamo Humtsoe in a notice informed that certain area of the building including RG Block, footwear and 1st floor Shop No. 17 to 42 would remain closed till technical assessment of the structural safety of the building is being carried out, taking into account the safety of the shopkeepers and customers.
